Dear EGSC members and students,
It is official that the August exam period will no longer take place. However, this is not the end of the story...
You should all know that the faculty did not make this decision for themselves as a spontaneous new rule. Just the opposite. The faculty has worked in the past several months to defend the August exam period but this was defeated from the higher echelons of the university and Education Ministry. Actually, all universities throughout the country are no longer allowed to hold an August exam period for the following reasoning:
The story in brief...
The Hungarian students beginning next year will have to pay tuition (150.000Ft). For those students who do not meet credit requirements by the end of the bureaucratic /academic year they will be required to pay more. According to the state, the deadline for the department of Education to calculate the Hungarian student credits accumulated is in July. And since an exam in August would exceed this deadline for calculating credits accumulated from the previous academic year, the August exam period is canceled. As you can imagine, the Hungarian students are doubly up in arms about this: they have to now pay a tuition fee and they also lose their August exam period.
What can we do as the student council?
With cooperation with the Hungarian Student Council we will issue a letter to the Education Ministry. The Hungarian student council is teaming up with the councils of other universities in the country to approach this problem systematically and strongly. They will draft a letter stating their concerns over this decision and we shall do the same. Our letters together will join the pleads of the other universities in efforts to reach a compromise concerning reinstatement of the August exam period.
What we ask of you...
Please reply to this email with your position on this topic. Write clearly why and how the August exam period is beneficial for you . I will collect these statements and add them to my letter next week. The Hungarian students are doing the same.
The current solution...
Prof. Csernus issued a faculty statement this afternoon in response to the growing frustrations. He has officially added an extra week to the June exam period. So the summer exam period will end July 4th, giving seven weeks total.
So this is where we stand now. I will update you with more information when it comes in. Please reply to
with your opinion/statement concerning the August exam period by Thursday, December 20th.
Best regards. Study well!
