Oxford Brookes University

Oxford’s location is best described as in the Thames Valley and is situated roughly 60 miles west of London. Bus services to the capital run every 20 minutes at very reasonable rates (£6.50). If you want to go to Heathrow- or Gatwick-Airport, it is just about an hour away and it will cost you about £13.00 for a return ticket.

Oxford Brookes has around 14,000 students - undergraduates and postgraduate. There are roughly equal numbers of men and women, and around 2,000 international students from over 100 countries. Today, we are about 17 Norwegian students here.

Brookes offers more than 70 single honours degrees, and over 1,500 possible joint honours combinations. Our modular programme is built for flexibility and enables you to:
Include modules from outside your chosen subject(s)
Study full-time or part-time
Take a year out, if you need to for personal reasons, or just a term
Transfer credits from previous study in the UK or abroad
Change your degree subject during your first year
Earn a Degree, Diploma of Higher Education, or Certificate of Higher Education
Study abroad, whatever your course

You may also take a Master Degree at Brookes, about 20% of the students are postgraduates. When you apply for a Master Degree, you have to contact the university directly otherwise you have to use the UCAS Application Form (it is in your best interest to apply before 15 December).

The academic year consists of two semesters, and each semester has a duration of 12 weeks.

Finance.
Tuition Fees: £9,400 (a bit higher when taking a Master Degree). The tuition fees are rising every year!!!!!
You will most probably get a loan and a scholarship from Lånekassen, but it depend on your course. Check with Lånekassen before applying!
After personal experience, I have to admit that Oxford is an expensive city. You will have to provide more money besides the money given from Lånekassen. I would guess that a Norwegian student may spent about 180,000 NOK during a year in Oxford ( about 130,000 NOK goes to tuition fees and rent).

Accommodation.
There is a wide variety of accommodation both on and off campus. The following options are available:-
Halls of Residence: The University has eleven halls of residence offering approximately 2,500 single-study bedrooms, of which 450 are catered.
Cost (1999-2000 academic year):
catered £75-£80 per week
self-catered £60-£82 per week

Lodgings: Rent a room in an owner-occupied house.
Host family accommodation: You can live with a host family. The University can help with this arrangement.
Shared housing: The University manages a number of fully furnished houses.
Average rent: £65 per week (excludes heating and lighting).
Private rental flats/houses: The Accommodation Office will display details of private, rented houses within the office.
Average rent: £60 per week (excludes heating and lighting).

Social life.
There is plenty to do in Oxford. The shopping is excellent, with many of the big name stores plus small specialist outlets. There’s even a two hundred year old covered market in the city centre.

For entertainment, Oxford offers something for everyone: pubs, clubs, restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee bars, cinemas, theatre, museums, ice skating, League football, county and touring cricket in The Parks.

The University has got its own Sports Centre (opened in 1995). Facilities: Squash Courts, Sport Hall, Climbing room, Weights room, Fitness suite. There are also other facilities like swimming close to the University. Oxford Brookes’ present core sports are: rowing (double British University Champions), rugby, basketball, climbing and hockey.

Oxford Brookes Students’ Union (OBSU): provides a range of services to cater for students’ welfare, social, educational and cultural needs as well as representing you at all levels of University decision-making. It also runs shops and bars. The OBSU has got a 1,200 capacity venue, fitted with state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment. Here, we have club nights, balls, film nights, comedy acts, open mic night, karaoke and live music acts.

The OBSU has got more than 65 student-run clubs and societies. Most Norwegian students are members of the “Scandinavian Society”. Great society if you want to have fun together with other Scandinavians. We have pub-crawls, dinner-parties, barbecue etc. Remember to bring a Viking-helmet!
